A Century of hard work and excellence
Recognizing Chinese immigrants’ contribution to the building of Canada.

“From Exclusion to Inclusion”
Chair Nancy Siew was invited to make the opening speech. She encouraged every Canadian to join hands in making Canada a better place for future generations, so we do not repeat a Human Rights travesty again.
Videographer/ photographer Kwoi Gin, a survivor of Exclusion, talked about his family’s experience and discrimination.
It was a very successful event, well-attended by many dignitaries and visitors.
The credit goes to Chair Grace Su and her group of volunteers.
Well done and thank you for allowing us to be a part of your auspicious occasion!

VISION
By educating Canadians about the trials, hardships, tribulations and successes of Chinese immigrants to Canada since the Exclusion Act of 1923, Canadians will learn valuable lessons from the past and contribute to our living together in a country of Respect, Harmony and Prosperity.

MISSION
Upon the arrival of Chinese labourers to Canada in the 19th Century, the Federal and Provincial governments passed legislation, essentially depriving these immigrants of their basic human rights. Despite facing a history of overt racism and institutional discrimination targeted against them specifically, Chinese Canadians overcame periods of separation and silence to pioneer and contribute to Canada’s society and economy.
The introduction and imposition of substantial, punitive payments (“Chinese Head Taxes”) from 1885 to 1923, caused great, economic hardship, disadvantage, and human suffering, but the perseverance and contributions of Chinese Canadians remain a timely and significant turning point in the creation of the Province of British Columbia and the founding of Confederation over a century later.
The year 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of this Act. Our aim is to educate Canadians about the injustices done to the early Chinese immigrants through films, videos, books, lectures and other media.

The year 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of this Act. Our aim is to educate Canadians of the injustices done to the early Chinese immigrants and to petition the Governments to contribute toward a private-public memorial to be built in honour of the Chinese pioneers in The Greater Toronto Area and other cities where the majority of Chinese-Canadians are now residing. As a parallel endeavour, we are determined to educate Canadians and others about the plight of those immigrants through films, videos, books, lectures and other media.
In today’s episode we are talking about the upcoming exhibit, Standing in the Doorway: Lived Histories & Experiences of the Chinese Community, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act.
This exhibit is a collection of personal stories and artifacts that shed light on the experiences of Chinese immigrants in Canada during the early 1900s. This exhibit serves as a reminder of the progress that has been made and the work that still needs to be done to create a more inclusive society. The YRDSB is partnering with Markham Museum to provide an opportunity for students, families, and educators to learn about this important part of Canadian history and engage in meaningful conversations about identity, diversity, and equity.
